During the second day of the Arctic Encounter Symposium, panelists discussed the problems and solutions regarding waste management in rural Alaska.

Rural Alaska waste management panel part of Arctic Encounter Symposium presentations happening in Anchorage this weekANCHORAGE, Alaska - When Evelyn Agnus was growing up in Chefornak, a small village west of Bethel, her community had to burn trash as a form of waste management . That form of waste management — one she said many rural communities often use — was a springboard for Agnus speaking Thursday as part of this week’s Arctic Encounter Symposium.

“We need innovative technologies to reduce emissions with our landfill burning,” she said, “and I think, if communities work together, even though they’re so far distanced from other communities and hubs, we can find a sustainable way to work.” Agnus pointed to the impacts waste burning could even have on individuals who collect their drinking water from the rain.

“It’s been a toxic soup for decades,” Shannon said. “It’s crazy to have taken a design for a mountain and put it right into a wetland community.”“Right now, in one of our communities, they’re paying trash collectors $16 an hour,” she said. “That’s insane.”
