Temporary traffic lights will be installed on Otley Bridge, Leeds, to manage traffic during the replacement of the existing footpath. This follows protests from campaigners who sought to prevent the felling of two trees to allow the installation of a temporary footbridge. The council now states that the traffic lights will be in place for at least six months, causing congestion, delays to emergency services, and increased air pollution.
Temporary traffic lights are to be installed on Otley Bridge to manage traffic as work to install a new footpath on the bridge gets underway.
According to the council, to allow for the installation of the temporary footbridge, two trees will need to be cut down, and this needs to be done before bird nesting season begins at the end of February. Due to the protests from locals, the trees have not been cut down. Mill Lane up to Manor Street will also be closed to reduce traffic. Previously, Otley Bridge only operated with a single lane of traffic over the New Year period as the footpath had to be closed to ensure the safety of people observing the New Years' Day swim, which was later cancelled.
"Due to significant constraints on site, there are only two viable options open to us to allow this essential repair work to go ahead; building a temporary footway which unfortunately would mean the loss of two trees, or temporary traffic lights on Otley Bridge for around six months. "If the two trees cannot be removed before the end of February, the temporary footway cannot be installed, and we will have to resort to reducing Otley Bridge to a single lane of traffic using temporary signals for at least six months.
