The Trafford Centre is set to become the first shopping centre in the UK to introduce a paid-for premium parking zone. The new zone, located in the Upper Peel 5 Car Park next to Selfridges, will offer larger parking spaces for 'premium shoppers'. Details on pricing and opening date are yet to be released.
A paid-for, premium parking zone will soon be introduced at the Trafford Centre and it has sparked plenty of debate. It will be the first time any area of car parking at the giant shopping centre has levied a charge.
However the bigger spaces means the overall number in the area has reduced - down from 247 to 199. The Premium Parking area is in one half of the Upper Peel 5 car park - the section on the Selfridges side. A canopy is also set to be installed on one section - to cover cars that opt for a valet service as part of their stay in Premium Parking - to keep them safe from 'rain and birds'.
According to the original planning application, there will also be a kiosk and a couple of electronic payment points which suggest you will also be able to pay on the day. Who are 'premium shoppers' and who will be able to park there? While much has been made of the fact that the Premium Parking plan is to appeal to 'Selfridges customers and other premium shoppers', it will ultimately be open to anyone who is happy to pay to park there.
When were plans first approved and what did they say? The Trafford Centre first submitted its car park plans back in March, and these were approved by Trafford Council on May 20, 2024. No objections were made by any parties when the application was first made. As we've previously reported, the plans approved have seen the number of spaces on the car park slashed - to allow bigger bay sizes of 3m by 5m wide . This is to 'accommodate luxury and family sized vehicles'.
It says that once cleaned, the car will be returned to the Upper Level and parked under a soon-to-be installed canopy to 'protect cleaned cars from the rain and from birds'.
