Michelle Myatt, wife of a train driver who suffered a heart attack while on duty, blames the absence of a defibrillator on the train for her husband's severe brain injury. Gareth Myatt was forced to make an emergency stop after someone jumped onto the tracks, and later suffered a heart attack. His wife argues that the delay in accessing medical attention due to the lack of a defibrillator caused irreparable brain damage.

The wife of a train driver who has been left brain damaged following a heart attack at work has said 'this should have been done years ago' as Translink confirm they are looking at installing defibrillators on carriages. Gareth Myatt was at work on May 16, and driving a train along the Belfast to Portadown line when someone jumped on to the tracks just outside of Lisburn causing him to make an emergency stop.

While he managed to ensure that the train stopped before a collision, Gareth was left extremely shaken by the ordeal. He tried his best to continue working after this but a few minutes later he suffered a heart attack and was found unconscious by the train conductor, with nurses who were on board carrying out CPR until an ambulance arrived an hour later. Since then, Gareth has been in hospital recovering from the traumatic brain injury he suffered as a result of the heart attack, with his wife Michelle saying the lack of a defibrillator on the train was a driving force in her husband's injury becoming so serious. She has had the issue of defibrillators on Translink trains raised to the Chief Executive of the public transport provider and that train drivers, conductors and passengers should not be placed at risk on trains due to the life-saving equipment not being there. Speaking to Belfast Live, Michelle said: 'The lack of a defibrillator on the train that Gareth was driving resulted in the substantial damage to Gareth's brain. 'He was forced to remain in a critically ill state for an hour because emergency services could not access him and no defibrillator was available to stabilise him. Every minute that he was without a steady heartbeat and oxygenated blood destroyed large areas of his brain. 'This destroyed all our lives'
