Transdniestria, a breakaway region in Moldova, has secured a temporary natural gas supply agreement with a Hungarian company, financed by a Russian loan. While this alleviates the immediate crisis caused by the halt in Russian gas exports via Ukraine, the 16-day deal offers little long-term security. Moldovan officials express concerns about the region's continued reliance on Russian gas and the potential for future disruptions.

Transdniestria , a breakaway pro- Russia n region of Ukraine's neighbor Moldova , has agreed on a deal with a Hungarian company to purchase natural gas under a loan provided by Russia . Transdniestria n leader Vadim Krasnoselsky revealed in Telegram that the delivery of gas 'was made possible by Russia n credit and functional support,' although he did not provide further details.

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean states that his country will not obstruct gas flows to Transndniestria under the agreement involving Hungary's MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG. Last month, the pro-Russian region faced a crisis after Russian gas exports via pipelines running through Ukraine ceased on New Year's Day, disrupting heating and hot water supplies to households. Local energy company Tirasteploenergo urged residents to utilize electric heaters, wear warm clothing, and hang blankets or thick curtains over windows and balcony doors. However, Transdniestria's situation remains precarious. According to Recean, the agreement stipulates that MET Gas will supply 3 million cubic meters of gas per day starting from February 13 for only 16 days. He revealed that Transdniestria declined an EU offer of 60 million euros to finance gas purchases on the grounds that it would have necessitated consumers to gradually pay more for gas. 'The inhabitants of the Transdniestria region will continue to live in a state of unpredictability and worry about gas supply,' Recean stated. 'It's a solution that doesn't solve the problem long term.'Europe's gas inventories have continued to decline, with the latest weekly draw of 3.72 billion cubic meters at 96% of the five-year average draw. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe GIE data, inventories stood at 61.85 bcm on February 2, and are 19.05 bcm lower year-on-year and 6.77 bcm below the five-year average. European natural gas futures surged towards 58 per megawatt-hour on Monday, the highest level since January 2023, as colder weather accelerates the depletion of regional storage.
