Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League
Manchester City face an intriguing goalkeeper question heading into the summer transfer window and beyond amid Ederson transfer talk.
Simon Bajkowski City won't stand in Ederson's way if he wants to go, and the money on offer from the Saudi Pro League will ensure they are well compensated for him - but it shouldn't be what either player or club want. Ederson is entitled to feel a little unloved at how much support there was for Ortega last season, but he should also admit that he could have had a better year and be appreciative of the way the club have gone out of their way in the last few months to let everybody know that he is No.1. Even when Ortega signed his new deal a few weeks ago, sporting director Txiki Begiristain referred to him as a No.2.
Ederson is the man who has transformed City's way of playing, and won them the Champions League final just as much as Rodri did. If Guardiola and Begiristain feel the Brazilian needs 'the best number two City have ever had' to keep his standards high, then so be it. If those standards drop, Ortega will be ready to come in.
But, if Ederson doesn't want to go, or the offer isn't good enough, then he should stay and stay as No. 1. The way Ortega played last season seems to have influenced a few opinions on Ederson, who has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for a while and fits this team well. Isaac Johnson I feel as though any talk of Ederson potentially losing his No.1 status is premature. The shelf life of a goalkeeper is longer than those of outfield players and the Brazilian is still 30, so he’s by no means ‘past it’.
