Traffic was at a standstill for the weekend

No plans are in place for a Deansgate ‘relief route’ this weekend, despite Manchester being set to face more heavy Christmas traffic.

Transport for Greater Manchester , which has no role in managing the roadworks, will be carrying out live traffic management as usual this coming weekend , it said in a new statement. The row about Deansgate deepened on Tuesday , after the city’s deputy Liberal Democrat leader Coun Chris Northwood roadworks’ disruption ‘needs to take more seriously when planning and executing works’.

'It's chaos' Residents and local businesses previously told the Manchester Evening News that the tailbacks have become a daily occurrence. And Mohin Khan, an Uber driverfrom Longsight, says they are having a noticeable impact on his takings. "From here to the nearest next postcode, which is Hulme, M15, it can take 35 minutes when its only a mile away. In the time I used to be able to do about 10 drop-offs and pick-ups, I can only do one or two now. It's bad for the environment, you can't turn your engine off when you're in traffic.
