A decision by South Cambridgeshire District Council to approve plans for 16 caravans at a site called The Piggery has been met with strong criticism from local residents and parish councillor Barry Todd.
Barry Todd, local parish councillor, criticized the decision to permit travellers to occupy more fields. He stated that the village, with a population of 4,500, cannot accommodate any more travellers. Despite residents' opposition, South Cambridgeshire District Council approved plans for 16 caravans at a site called The Piggery. However, Mr. Todd condemned the decision. He expressed concerns about the increasing number of travellers in Willingham , stating that it has become a hotspot.
He emphasized the need for caution, acknowledging that both positive and negative aspects exist in every community. The latest controversy arose from a retrospective planning application for 16 caravans and three amenity buildings at The Piggery, off Haden Way. The parish council objected due to the lack of mains drainage and the site's location on agricultural land at the edge of the village, accessible via an unmade road. Mr. Todd pointed out that the site is a public footpath and not their land. He also mentioned that travellers race their cars up and down the road leading to the site, disregarding other vehicles. This incident follows another planning application where traveller Pender Smith sought to convert Everetts Field, in Meadow Road, into a new residence for his family. South Cambridgeshire District Council granted approval for two static caravans and three mobile caravans. During a planning committee meeting earlier this year, the council heard how the Smith family has resided in the area for most of their lives and their children attend local schools. The Smiths sought to relocate after the owner of their current site required the land for his own family. Due to a 'very limited' number of spaces in existing traveller sites and an 'extensive waiting list', planning officers recommended granting the Smiths permission to convert the land
