Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold reminisced about a formative encounter against Manchester City's Brandon Barker during his youth career. The Reds defender lauded Barker's talent, stating he was the most impressive opponent he had ever faced.
In a Liverpool interview in 2023, Reds vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold was asked about the best player he'd ever faced. He recalled a memorable match from his youth playing for Liverpool's Under-21s. At just 18 years old, Alexander-Arnold made his first appearance at Anfield, but it was a tough experience as they lost 3-0 to Manchester City's U21s. Alexander-Arnold singled out Brandon Barker as the player who truly dominated him that day.
Barker scored two goals and provided an assist, leaving a lasting impression on the young Alexander-Arnold. 'I was 18, playing for the Under-21s, first-ever time at Anfield, got beat 3-0. He scored two and got an assist. I came off at 60', he recounted. 'Still to this day, he's the opponent I think that just destroyed me, man. I've never had it like that before. Richarlison can do nothing right at Tottenham - he's destined for Saudi Arabia switch'. At that point, I'm thinking, 'This kid is going to be the best player in the world'. Because I'd never seen someone move so quickly and sharp and effectively, so I'd say Brandon Barker.'Alexander-Arnold also went on to discuss his own career journey, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunities he's had and the support of his family. 'I’ve never been too bothered about money. One goal I had when I started was to help my mum and dad buy a very nice house,' said the 28-year-old. 'I was lucky enough to be able to do that. Me and my family have completely different lives now from when I was growing up, so I’m grateful for that. Setbacks happen. I’ve been through a lot, but there are footballers who have been through more setbacks than me. 'I’ve just got to keep trying and giving it everything I’ve got until I can’t do it anymore. I just want to play.' Barker responded to Alexander-Arnold's praise, acknowledging that his former opponent had faced numerous formidable players during his career. While appreciating the compliment, Barker playfully mentioned his own performance that day. 'I’m sure he’s had more difficult games, given some of the superstars he played against, but it’s nice of him to say it. I’d never played against him before. 'He looked very young and he was very small and skinny, whereas I was already established at that level. But I was pretty good that day, to be fair.'Barker's journey has taken him through various clubs, including loan spells at Rotherham United, NAC Breda, Hibernian, and Preston North End. He made a brief appearance for Manchester City in a cup match, but his main opportunities came during his time at Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership title. He also had spells at Oxford United and Reading, before moving to Cyprus to play for Omonia. Most recently, he had a short stint at Morecambe in League Two. Through it all, Barker has remained dedicated to his craft and continues to pursue his passion for football
