The Cup Series returns to the track after a two-week break for the Olympics. Denny Hamlin is the favorite in Sunday’s Cook Out 400.

JON JOHNSON Troy athletics director Brent Jones recently sat down with the Dothan Eagle for an interview covering a wide range of topics, from NIL to future scheduling to the possibility of increased scholarships to the stability of the Sun Belt Conference .

A: No one knows. First off, it hasn’t been approved yet. Second is, I think everyone right now is running models of what that looks like. And the most unknown item in intercollegiate athletics is the House/Oliver case and what that means for Division I athletics. There is a lot of uncertainty across the board. No one has any answers, unfortunately. From the timeline we are hearing, it could be January or February until we understand if this case has been settled.

As part of that, it is Name, Image and Likeness, it is collectives, it is being able to travel the way you want. I’m very thankful for our fans. This past year we set records in attendance in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. Records in ticket sales in football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Records in fund-raising and records in licensing. At the same time, had the second-highest GPA with almost a 3.

A: I feel like the Sun Belt Conference is the leader. Under commissioner Keith Gill’s leadership … being able to add dynamic partners JMU, ODU, Marshall, Southern Miss. Again, the proof is in the pudding. What we’ve been able to do in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s basketball, football, you see volleyball … it’s super competitive. Each time that you play a Sun Belt Conference school, you know that you’re going to have to really be able to put your best foot forward.
