A Memorial Day event at Greenwood Cemetery paid tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen.
TUSKEGEE, Ala. - On Memorial Day, America pauses to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defending this country. Across Alabama, groups honored those lives in their own way, like at Greenwood Cemetery in Tuskegee.
At a memorial for the Tuskegee Airmen, one speaker said, “The United States never goes looking for the fight, but the United States always stands prepared and does all that it can in the fight.”Many of those infamous airmen are buried at Greenwood Cemetery. Current military and veterans paid their respects to those who paved the way while paying the ultimate price.
“So let us never forget that we are here because those who are willing to stand and protect us and give their lives for our liberty and freedom and for generations to come. That’s the strength of our community. That’s the strength of our nation,” Tuskegee Mayor Tony Haygood said at the podium. Of the many speakers, the American Legion Department’s junior vice commander, Willie Rogers, shared the history behind Memorial Day and the significance of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He described how the famous monument serves as a place of mourning for those whose loved ones went missing during service or have no burials or markers.
“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is where these families can be with their loved ones, regardless of the conflict or period they served in. What greater symbol of respect and dignity owed our veterans and their families,” said Rogers.Britton McKenzie American Legion Post 150 hosted the memorial service.Copyright 2024 WSFA.
