Former TV presenter Sarah Cawood stays positive in face of stage one breast cancer diagnosis: ‘I feel really lucky’.

The 50-year-old, best known for stints on Top Of the Pops and children’s show Live and Kicking, said that it was picked up during her first ever routine mammogram.

After being told she couldn’t have her screening result back yet, and undergoing a further mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, she started to ‘assume the worst’ before she received her diagnosis.‘The surgeon went, “Can you see that? That’s a very small cancerous lump”. And I went, “Oh, OK, is it aggressive?”.

‘And she said, “No”. And I went, “Brilliant”. I was demob happy. I was like, “OK, so easily fixed?”, and she was like, “Yes, not really much of a problem”.Recalling that after all of her worrying, there were no tears and ‘it wasn’t very dramatic’, the broadcaster’s course of treatment includes a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and the hormone blocker Tamoxifen, which she’ll need to take for five to ten years.

However, Sarah is well aware of her privileged position when it comes to having a cancer diagnosis, which she initially received in August.: ‘It really is the Carlsberg of breast cancers. If you have to have it, this is the one to have. I feel really lucky. There are people that really are up s**t creek without a paddle, who have cancer, and I am not that person.
