An announcement about two potential new Lancaster and Preston hospitals is due in December
Two brand-new hospitals could be built in Lancaster and Preston with other hospital sites in Morecambe and south Cumbria unaffected, Lancaster City Council has heard.
However, other recent factors such as the changing economic backdrop and rising construction costs may shape government decisions. There have also been changing prime ministers, chancellors and other government ministers at Westminster. Various government funding announcements are expected in coming weeks.Green Coun Caroline Jackson, who is leader of the council, gave a brief update in a written report to councillors.
Conservative Coun Joan Jackson said: “Will the leader confirm that the proposal for a new hospital in Lancaster is still on the table and no contrary decision has been made, despite what the Lib-Dems say in their leaflets.” Coun Caroline Jackson replied: “I welcome any money that comes into hospitals and healthcare, of course.”The Morecambe Bay NHS trust runs hospitals including Furness General Hospital in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal and community health centres including Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, Millom Hospital and Ulverston Health Centre.
