George Haslam, 92, and Sidney Hughes, 81, who was due to be be compassionately released, were both inmates at HMP Wymott
Two elderly sex offenders from the same Lancashire prison passed away due to natural causes within a month of each other.
A prison buddy was also in place to support him with general tasks. On October 20 2023, Haslam was said to be unwell - he was bumping into objects and his urine smelt strongly, the ECHO reports. The report said: "The clinical reviewer concluded that the care Mr Haslam received at Wymott was of reasonable standard and was partially equivalent to what he could have expected to receive in the community." The report also said the ombudsman's family liaison officer contacted Haslam's son to explain the investigation but he did not respond.
Staff noted Hughes was suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and was on medication for this. On January 26 2023 he was moved to the Haven unit, exclusively for prisoners with additional needs. In May of the same year he was diagnosed with stage 4 recurrent caecal adenocarcinoma with lung and abdominal lymph node metastatic cancer.
After details were obtained from a GP, prison staff sent back the report to the senior probation officer, who was based in Hertfordshire. After a number of follow up emails chasing the status of the report in September, October and November the probation officer said they still did not have enough information regarding Hughes' treatment pathway.
