Monday's front page: EU chief flies in to seal Brexit deal TomorrowsPapersToday Latest by HugoGye:
is travelling to the UK for talks with Rishi Sunak in Windsor, where the two leaders will finalise the details of their agreement after months of negotiations between their teams.will also step up his intensive lobbying of Conservative MPs and the Democratic Unionist Party . Leading Brexiteers and unionists have said they will reserve judgement until they have read the agreement in full.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is expected to finalise a new deal on the Protocol with Mr Sunak “The Prime Minister wants to ensure any deal fixes the practical problems on the ground, ensures trade flows freely within the whole of the UK, safeguards Northern Ireland’s place in our Union and returns sovereignty to the people of Northern Ireland.
“If a final deal is agreed, the Prime Minister and the president of the European Commission will then hold a short joint press conference in the late afternoon.“Over the past few months, there have been intensive negotiations with the EU – run by British ministers – and positive, constructive progress has been made.
It is not clear whether the deal will require a formal parliamentary vote but Tory backbenchers in the hardline European Research Group have warned they will seek to block any agreement which they feel restricts Northern Ireland’s sovereignty. The deal is expected to introduce “green lanes” which will allow goods to go unchecked if they are not destined for further export to the EU. But it will not eliminate the role of EU judges in ruling on disputes related to the Protocol, which is a key demand of the European Research group of Tory MPs.
