Britain is preparing for a significant drop in temperatures from the end of this week, with forecasts predicting lows of -5C. After one of the sunniest Januarys on record, chilly conditions will set in from Thursday, bringing a risk of snow and ice. The Met Office attributes this change to high pressure shifting from the UK to Scandinavia, drawing cold air from the continent. While the conditions will be cold, the Met Office assures that they are not expected to be as severe as the 'Beast from the East' in 2018.

Britain is bracing for another cold snap from the end of this week with temperatures set to plunge to -5C, following one of the country's sunniest Januarys on record.

It comes after last month was declared the UK's fifth sunniest January on record, despite the country enduring rain, snow and the most powerful windstorm in over a decade. But the Met Office reassured Britons that while conditions will be cold, they are not expected to be as severe as those seen in February and March 2018.That caused widespread travel chaos as roads and rail lines shut, thousands of schools were closed and isolated communities received supplies by helicopter.

The Met Office has a yellow rain warning in place for parts of South West Scotland until 1pm this afternoon with up to 60mm expected over hills. A deep area of low pressure is moving through Greenland and then into Iceland – with a cold plunge over the west Atlantic, which helps to force the jet stream south. This then pushes the jet stream to the north of the UK and to the north of the Norwegian Sea, sending warm air up into Norway and the Arctic. That helps to build a large area of high pressure over the UK

That feature helps to build a large area of high pressure over the UK which will remain in place for some time and become 'very, very amplified' – blocking Atlantic weather coming in. 'So this isn't going to be nearly as cold, certainly at first or as widely disruptive as the Beast From The East of 2018. But it will still be cold.

The top spot is held by January 1959, which saw an average of 69.7 hours of sunshine, while 2001 is in second place. A cold snap early in the new year helped pull down the mean average temperature for the month, which was 3.0C.
