The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for Lancashire as Storm Eowyn is set to bring strong winds and potential danger to life on Friday. Gusts of up to 90 mph are expected along coastal areas and hills, with widespread disruption anticipated.

Met Office forecasters have upgraded a weather warning for Lancashire as strong winds are expected to batter the county on Friday. An amber weather alert, which warns of a ' danger to life ' and power cuts due to flying debris, has been issued for the whole of the county ahead of the arrival of Storm Eowyn . The warning for strong wind also covers northern England, north Wales, southern Scotland, and Northern Ireland and is in place from 6 am to 9 pm on Friday (January 24).

Gusts of up to 90 mph could be seen along coastal areas and hills in the warning area, with 60 to 70 mph winds expected more widely, the Met Office said. A separate yellow weather warning for wind is already in place across Lancashire on Friday between midnight and 11.59 pm. The amber warning states: 'Storm Eowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, clearing to the northeast on Friday night. This will bring a spell of strong winds, initially south to southeasterly before turning west to southwesterly, with peak gusts of 50-60 mph inland, 60-70 mph around some coasts and hills, and perhaps up to 80 mph in exposed parts of western Scotland. It should be noted that there may be a slight reduction in wind strength for a time as the centre of Storm Eowyn passes overhead, this most likely in parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland, before winds rapidly increase again. The wind strength will gradually ease across southern areas later on Friday.' The Met Office is urging people in affected areas to be prepared, warning them to expect 'very strong winds and widespread disruption'. Forecasters say people should check for loose items outside their homes - such as bins, garden furniture, and sheds - and plan how to secure them. People who have to travel are also being told to plan ahead and ensure they have essentials such as warm clothing and water with them if they are driving. The Met Office adds: 'If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves, even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead.
