Following a mild Christmas, the UK is expected to experience a sudden drop in temperatures with potential for widespread snowfall by mid-week.

Brits should prepare for potential 'severe' snowfall as early as next week, as UK temperatures are set to plummet. Following a mild Christmas, colder conditions are expected to sweep in before the new year, bringing snow to some parts of the country. Parts of the UK experienced the mildest Christmas Day start on record, with temperatures reaching 14.2C in Dyce, Aberdeen, and 13.9C in Wales, while Durham saw highs of 13.8C.

Mild and cloudy conditions will prevail in the coming days, with rain expected in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and chillier, brighter skies in the northwest. However, the Met Office warns of an 'erratic change' in the weather from December 31, with potential for widespread snowfall in the UK by mid-week. The long range forecast, covering December 31 to January 9, reveals: 'An erratic change from the mild and largely settled conditions of the past few days is expected. Rain, stronger winds and some snow already across Scotland may on Tuesday become more severe and start to push southwards through the middle part of next week, bringing a chance of snow to other parts of the UK, along with colder conditions more widely.' However, the cold snap is not expected to last too long, with milder conditions predicted to return by the end of next week. The Met Office forecast stated: 'A period of more settled weather then seems probable later next week, with a gradual recovery in temperatures to nearer average for the time of year, perhaps even mild.', reports the Manchester Evening News. Looking further ahead, the Met Office suggested a 'fairly changeable picture is most likely', but admitted that confidence at this stage is 'very low'. They indicated that the wettest and windiest weather would be experienced in the north and west, while the south and east are likely to remain more settled overall
