The Met Office has issued a rare amber cold alert for all of England as temperatures take a sharp drop, prompting warnings of heavy snowfall and freezing conditions. The alert, which started on January 2nd, is predicted to last until January 8th, with potential disruptions to health and transport services.

The Met Office has issued a rare amber alert for all of England as temperatures plummet. The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office have issued a joint warning to every region in anticipation of heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. The amber cold health alert began at midday on Thursday, 2 January, and is expected to last until midday on Wednesday, 8 January. The severe cold snap is anticipated to significantly impact health and social care services.

Those over 65 and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable, with the harsh weather potentially leading to an increase in fatalities. Health services and transport systems are preparing for the strain, with anticipated travel disruptions and a surge in hospital admissions. Alerts cover regions including the West Midlands, East Midlands, northeast, northwest, Yorkshire and The Humber, east of England, London, southeast, and southwest. The Met Office's forecast predicts 'a cold but mostly sunny day across the UK', with 'wintry showers for coasts exposed to the northerly breeze and North Sea. Remaining blustery in the north and east with lighter winds elsewhere'. They further caution 'a cold and frosty night will then follow for all with icy stretches possible. Wintry showers will persist in the north and patchy freezing fog is possible in the west'. Looking ahead to Friday, 3 January, the Met Office states: 'Cold again with plenty of winter sunshine on offer, especially in the south and east. Wintry showers affecting northern and western coasts, winds staying generally light'. For the weekend outlook from Saturday, 5 January, to Monday, 6 January, they've added: 'Possibly disruptive rain and snow arriving in the south on Saturday, moving north into central areas on Sunday where it will turn milder. Colder, drier with wintry showers on Monday'
