The Met Office issued a rare amber cold health alert covering the entire England due to anticipated freezing temperatures and heavy snow. The alert is in effect from January 2nd to January 8th and warns of potential severe impacts on health and social care services. The elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions are considered most vulnerable.
The Met Office has issued a rare amber alert for the entirety of England as temperatures are set to plummet. The UK Health Security Agency, in conjunction with the national forecaster, has issued a warning for every region of the country ahead of heavy snow and bracing temperatures.
They said those aged 65 and over, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are most at risk as the freezing conditions could lead to a "rise in deaths". Health services and transport are also likely to feel the pressure as the weather is set to cause travel chaos and a surge in admissions. "Wintry showers for coasts exposed to the northerly breeze and North Sea. Remaining blustery in the north and east with lighter winds elsewhere.", reports the Mirror.
For the period from Saturday, January 5, to Monday, January 6, it added: "Possibly disruptive rain and snow arriving in the south on Saturday, moving north into central areas on Sunday where it will turn milder. Colder, drier with wintry showers on Monday."
