A 647-mile 'snow bomb' is set to hit the UK, with temperatures expected to plummet to a bone-chilling -9C, weather experts have warned. Weather maps indicate that freezing conditions will engulf areas stretching across the UK on December 22, turning WXCharts maps a snowy white. The forecasts suggest that places like Fort William, Portree, and Wick could experience the harshest cold, with mercury levels potentially dropping to -9C on December 23.
Meanwhile, other Scottish towns and cities might face temperatures ranging from -5C to -3C, as shown by Netweather.tv's projections. Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, Dan Harris, has commented: 'A deep area of low pressure is expected to pass to the north of Scotland on Saturday, heading towards southwest Norway. Yellow wind warnings are currently in place across northern and western parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, where there's a small chance of gusts in excess of 80mph across parts of the Hebrides, Orkney, and parts of the north and west Scottish mainland coast,' reports the Express. Harris also warned, 'Delays or cancellations to sea and air transport are possible given these winds, amongst other impacts.' He cautioned that more broadly, gusts of 60-75mph are likely and may cause some travel disruption, particularly during the busy pre-Christmas period. The Met Office's outlook for the weekend indicates we're in for a chilly one: 'Rain will also move in on Saturday, with the highest accumulations in the northwest, followed by frequent heavy showers which will turn increasingly wintry on higher ground later. A covering of snow is possible for some hills and mountains as far south as the Peak District by Sunday morning.'
