The UK company's Arabian venture follows a record £3.7bn spent on a new Belgian plant as well as investments across the UK.

The petrochemical company founded by Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said it will buy a £1.6bn stake in a plant complex in Saudi Arabia.

Ineos will build three plants that will form part of a $5bn petrochemical complex being developed by state-owned Saudi Aramco and France's Total. Ineos said on Monday that the Saudi location would give the company access to competitive raw materials and energy, as well as infrastructure, that would help it better serve customers directly in the Middle East and across Asian markets.Saudi Aramco is the world's largest oil company - and the world's most profitable company altogether, according to Forbes magazine.

Ineos chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe said in a statement:"The timing is right for us to enter this significant agreement in Saudi Arabia with Saudi Aramco and Total."We are bringing advanced downstream technology which will add value and create further jobs in the Kingdom."
