Foreign Minister Penny Wong says all countries must ensure China and the US can find “strategic guardrails” to avoid war.

| Europe’s increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific, including deploying warships, is welcome, Foreign Minister Penny Wong says, because it is helping to preserve the strategic balance and deterrence in the region and to uphold international law.she directly raised with China’s then-foreign minister Wang Yi the need to develop “strategic guardrails” to stop competition with the United States spiralling into conflict.

“We must ensure that competition between major powers is managed responsibly. It is up to all countries to ask ourselves how can we each use our national power, our influence, our networks, our capabilities, to avert catastrophic conflict.“President Biden’s leadership in putting guardrails for strategic competition on the table is welcome. It is in the world’s interests that his overtures are met.

“The deployment of UK and European naval assets to the Indo-Pacific adds to strategic equilibrium and collective deterrence in our region,” Senator Wong said. “For just as we all have a role to play in the reshaping of our region, so too do we all have a role to play in defending the rules-based order,” she said. Her comments came after Trade Minister Don Farrell revealed he would hold a virtual meeting with his Chinese counterpart next week, as he seeks to end the Beijing sanctions that have crippled $20 billion worth of exports.

Senator Wong said Australia’s investment in future defence capabilities was essential for deterring conflict and maintaining a strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific.
