The UK Foreign Office has issued a new travel warning for Turkey due to reports of deaths and serious illnesses linked to consumption of illegally produced local spirits. Travelers are urged to only consume alcohol from licensed establishments and to be vigilant about counterfeit products.

The UK Foreign Office has issued a renewed warning for travelers planning a trip to Turkey. This updated safety advice follows reports of individuals dying or suffering severe illness after consuming illegally manufactured local spirits. The Foreign Office, which provides travel advisories for approximately 226 countries and territories, strongly urges all holidaymakers traveling from the UK to Turkey to exclusively consume alcohol purchased from licensed liquor stores and bars.

They must exercise caution by carefully inspecting labels and bottle seals for any signs of tampering. This advisory follows concerning reports of over 100 fatalities attributed to the consumption of counterfeit alcohol in Turkey recently. The Foreign Office website states: 'In Turkey, including major cities like Ankara and Istanbul, people have died or experienced serious health complications after ingesting illegally produced local spirits and counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol.'To ensure their safety, the Foreign Office recommends the following precautions: 'purchase alcoholic beverages solely from licensed liquor stores, obtain drinks only from licensed bars and hotels, abstain from homemade alcoholic beverages, meticulously check bottle seals for intactness, and scrutinize labels for poor print quality or misspellings.' Furthermore, the Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for individuals visiting Turkey during the holy month of Ramadan, anticipated to commence on February 28 or March 1 and last for 29 or 30 days. This updated advice cautions that certain activities may cause offense to local residents. It states that during this period, the following actions could be deemed disrespectful: engaging in public displays of affection, consuming food or drinks openly in public during fasting hours, and wearing revealing or inappropriate attire. The advisory also informs tourists that the operating hours of shops and restaurants may be altered during Ramadan. Restaurants serving food or drinks during fasting hours may segregate non-Muslim guests from Islamic patrons, for example, using screens. It strongly emphasizes the importance of 'adhering to local dress codes – clothing that deviates from local standards could be perceived as more offensive during this time.'
