Households are being urged to keep their windows firmly shut for the next month as spider season is upon us. These eight-legged creatures are commonly found in homes towards the end of August and beginning of September. Spiders enter our homes to mate before they seek shelter for the winter. Female spiders usually stay in the same spot and wait for a male to find them, so if you see a spider roaming in your house it is likely a male.
They can squeeze through almost any gap even If your skirting boards and windows are all in decent condition and you've taken measures to seal any holes. The biggest invitation for a spider to enter your home is an open window and in the warmer months this may be a huge problem as we need to ventilate our homes. Spiders are known to be nocturnal creatures, so leaving a window open overnight could potentially invite them in.
