Police across Britain are urging residents to be extra vigilant about home security during the Christmas period, highlighting the concerning trend of declining burglary charge rates.
Police across Britain are issuing grave warnings concerning home security over the festive period, advising residents to be extra cautious about concealing Christmas presents and valuable items from view. They also recommend not leaving deliveries on doorsteps to deter opportunistic thieves.
The call for heightened vigilance comes amid statistics revealing a stark decline in the number of individuals charged with committing burglaries on Christmas Day—from 25% three years ago to just 10% more recently. Former high-ranking Police officer Kevin Moore, who served as Detective Chief Superintendent at Sussex Police, expressed that while a burglary can be harrowing at any time, it strikes a particularly harsh blow during the holiday season. In contrast, certain constabularies including Lancashire, Essex, Devon and Cornwall, and Humberside saw no charges brought against any suspects related to burglaries documented on December 25, with respective figures standing at 14, four, seven, and ten reported cases, reports the Express. Between 2019 and 2021, survey results highlighted that police were only solving one out of every four Christmas Day burglaries. Merseyside Police boasted the leading charge rate last year, with prosecution pursued in eight out of 18 recorded offences on Christmas Da
