More people will be in court today as the cases of those involved in riots see their sentences fast-tracked. There is concern disorder could ramp up again this weekend as the football season begins, with rising temperatures also a factor.
One of the most shocking aspects of the recent riots across the country has been the age of those involved.More than a quarter of people so far charged by police with offences linked to the riots are under the age of 21.Among those, an 11-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of arson after a police car was set alight in Hartlepool.
'We've seen on the footage that we get back from the scene, young people, children, are on the fringes of it, and in that mob mentality can get drawn in,' said Gavin Stephens, chairman of the National Police Chiefs' Council.'I think the youngest arrest was 11 years old. So, I think to have conversations with young people, children, teenagers over the course of the next few days is really, really important.
