Which? said the result is 'no surprise' and believes 'supermarkets are failing to adequately help shoppers during the current crisis'
The UK's cheapest supermarket in August 2023 has been named - and it costs up to £14 less than one of its rivals.
In August, the price of a basket of food in Aldi stood at £65.21. This was £14.30 cheaper than the most expensive supermarket Waitrose, which had a cost of £79.51 for the same basket of goods.Lidl was ranked second with a basket price of £66.53, followed by Asda in third at £71.48. They were followed by Tesco at Tesco at £74, Sainsbury's at £74.12, Morrisons at £75.37, and then Ocado at £79.51.
Asda was found to have the cheapest big shop of all the major UK supermarkets. The chain, owned by Blackburn's Issa brothers, has held this position since January 2020 bar one month when it was knocked off the top spot by Morrisons in July 2023. Ele Clark, Which? Retail Editor, said: "The cost of living crisis is taking its toll on households up and down the country and with many turning to discounters for their food shop, it is no surprise that our latest research shows that once again Aldi is the cheapest supermarket. Which? believes that supermarkets are failing to adequately help shoppers during the current crisis.
