The bill for the winner came to an average of £100.29
The consumer group Which? has named Aldi as the cheapest UK supermarket for 2024, beating its competitors by £29.54. The German discounter not only claimed the title for December but also for every other month of the year.
Lidl followed closely behind with a basket price of £101.48 with Lidl Plus, or £101.56 without the loyalty scheme. Waitrose was once again the most expensive supermarket, with a basket costing £129.83 in December, making it £29.54 more expensive than Aldi, reports the Mirror. Morrisons' average basket price was £114.01 with a More card, while without the card, the same basket would have cost £116.32. Ocado ranked second to last this month, with an average basket price of £120.83.
For nine months of the year, Asda was the cheapest supermarket for a larger trolley. However, Tesco's Clubcard prices have posed a strong challenge, making Tesco cheaper in three out of seven months since Which? started including loyalty prices in its analysis in June 2024.
