The Met Office has announced a string of names it will assign to storms this year – here we explain how the UK's weather events get their names ahead of next week's heatwave
The Met Office has shared the name of the UK's next storm amid predictions of a heatwave during the first full week of September.
This time around, they've paid homage to notable figures from the forecaster's 170-year history, picking out names such as James – in honour of D-Day weather forecaster Group Captain James Stagg – and Mavis – a nod to one of the body's early computer workers, Mavis Hinds.READ MORE: Oasis fans 'already stressed' for one reason as Gallagher brothers announce reunion tour
The list also includes Darragh, Eowyn, Floris, Gerben, Hugo, James, Kayleigh, Lewis, Naoise, Otje, Poppy, Rafi, and Sayuri. One Instagram user humorously commented: "4 of those names live under one roof in my house, I feel it's an omen of things to come!" The Met Office, which assigns storm names alphabetically, clarified that certain letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z are omitted in the naming process to maintain consistency with American forecasting conventions. This alignment is due to both the UK and US having shores along the Atlantic Sea, which means both can be affected by the same storms. Using the same naming practice enables cross-Atlantic consistency for storm names.
