All the western islands are under a 'state of alert for fires' and the public are being asked to take care as temperatures soar

British holidaymakers in the Canary Islands have been put on alert for potential wildfires. Authorities there have issued a 'state of alert' as parts of the archipelago face scorching temperatures this week.

Tourists frequenting high altitude regions and mountain summits should exercise extra caution due to the heightened risk of fires. Local news outlet Europapress.es has confirmed that "all the western islands" are on high alert for fires. The islands at risk include Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, and Gran Canaria, with an emphasis on "high areas and summits".

Individuals are being advised to camp solely within designated locations and to heed any advice provided by local authorities when exploring the mountains. In the event of spotting a wildfire, they should report it without delay by calling 112, reports the Manchester Evening News. An advisory posted on X detailed warnings from The Canary Islands' government Security and Emergencies department: "Remember risk alert in Western Islands and Gran Canaria.

Spain's meteorological agency Aemet has also released yellow alerts for high temperatures across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, and La Gomera. Gran Canaria may see temperatures soar above 37C, while mid 30s are expected on the rest of the affected islands. In addition to the scorching heat, strong winds are also forecasted, especially in coastal regions. Yellow warnings for 'strong gusts' reaching speeds of 50-70km/h have been issued for Tuesday in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma El Hierro and La Gomera.
