The new OECD health league tables also show that adults in the UK are some of the heaviest binge drinkers - defined as having at least six drinks in a single session
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development compared alcohol consumption across 33 member countries in its annual report on health. It found that the UK topped the global charts for binge drinking among women — defined as having at least six drinks in a single session — with one in four doing this at least once a month.
This ranged from just 3 per cent in Turkey to 37 per cent in Denmark. Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Change UK, said: "Alcohol causes too much harm here in the UK. But this is totally avoidable. The OECD report also shows there are more obese adults in the UK compared with the OECD average. Obesity prevalence was 28 per cent in the UK – higher than the OECD average of 25.7 per cent.
