In the village of Storozheve the signs of war were impossible to ignore. The main street had been obliterated and farms and meadows have been repurposed by the military.Nearby we found a muddy clearing that had been turned into a garage for"automotive first aid". The seven defendants were remanded in custody until 14 September, Russia's state-owned TASS news agency reported on Saturday.

In May a prominent Russian nationalist writer, Zakhar Prilepin, was wounded in a car bombing that killed his driver. Ben Wallace - the longest-serving Conservative defence secretary - has now confirmed he will step down from the cabinet at the next reshuffle - and as an MP at the next election. He revealed in his interview with The Times that, on the eve of the war in Ukraine, he discussed Britain supplying weapons to Kyiv - using whiskies as a code.

"So it may not be coincidental that he comes from Chula and he's close to the general who is one of the key players in Kremlin politics at the moment. As leader of the group, Major General Seliverstov has been involved in battles around Bakhmut since the beginning of this year.According to military analysts, the generals' dismissals are an indication of the division within Russian forces following the failed mutiny by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner Group.

Rhys Byrne, who is 28 and from Dublin, spoke to Sky's international correspondent John Sparks about fighting in the Ukrainian army for the past 17 months.
