THE NHS urgently calling for more blood donors of black heritage to help treat sickle cell.
With demand expected to continue to rise, health officials are urging more black blood donors to come forward. Currently, NHSBT is only able to provide matched blood for just over half of the hospital requests – other patients need to be treated with O Negative, the universal blood type. She added: “Every few weeks the hospital needs to remove all my sickled cells and replace them with donor blood.
As part of the campaign to get more black blood donors, NHSBT is this week launching a new campaign titled ‘Not Family, But Blood’ to recruit more donors of Black heritage.
