US fires cruise missile banned for 30 YEARS – in first test since Cold War era treaty with Russia scrapped
THE US has tested a missile banned for more than 30 years under a Cold War era treaty with Russia that both countries abandoned this month.
The modified ground-launched version of a Navy Tomahawk cruise missile was launched from San Nicolas Island, California.The missile was armed with a conventional, not nuclear, warhead. It was deployed along with Pershing 2 ground-based ballistic missiles, in response to a build-up of Soviet SS-20 missiles targeting Western Europe.The tense history of the nuclear arms raceBut it really got under way when the Soviet Union exploded its first bomb in 1949.
