Nash implied Dothan United is a prime example of what new franchises in the USL should strive to be.
JON JOHNSON A United Soccer League official in town Saturday gave Dothan United high praise during the Dragons’ scoreless tie against Asheville City SC in a battle of the two top teams in the USL2 South Central Division playing before a crowd of more than 4,000 at Rip Hewes Stadium.
“Part of my role at USL is vetting who gets a franchise,” Nash said. “So I was actually able to work with Steve Donner from the very birth of the idea before he moved to Dothan. On the pitch Saturday, it was an intense battle that saw the Dothan defense led by goalkeeper Yago Darub Valadares hold off a potent Asheville attack.
“Those games take a lot of energy out of you; there are so many tactical nuances and different changes throughout the game that constantly keeps you thinking,” a drained Dothan coach Carl Reynolds said. “Me and the opposition coach have known each other a long time and we knew we were going to test each other tonight and I think we did.
“They’ve been stalwarts,” Reynolds said. “ Moya was fantastic. He was carrying a little injury and he played through it. We dropped Andres into center back because Cristobal was suspended and he stepped up when we needed him to.”
