Optimism has seldom been lower among the United States women’s national team fanbase heading into the knockout stages of a tournament. The group stage did little to provide a reason for it; the team was one corner kick against the Netherlands and one shot off the post against Portugal away from watching the rest of the Women’s World Cup from home like the rest of us.
