While women have held No. 2 positions in some Vatican offices, this is the first time a woman has been named prefect of a dicastery or congregation of the Holy See Curia.
To address the theological implications, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime was named as a co-leader, or “pro-prefect,” alongside Brambilla. The Dicastery oversees all religious orders, making Brambilla’s appointment one of the most significant in the Vatican. This appointment, possible thanks to Francis’ 2022 reform allowing laypeople to head dicasteries, signifies a step towards greater female leadership in the Catholic Church
