Alternative ways to enter university are opening up and young people are re-evaluating their priorities after the pandemic.
VCE exam season gets under way on Monday, but if the trend of recent years is anything to go by more students will have chosen to do an unscored VCE and not sit exams or get an ATAR score, as alternative ways to enter university open up and young people re-evaluate their goals after the pandemic.
Gail McHardy, chief executive of Parents Victoria, said the attitudes and aspirations of young people were changing. “We focus a lot on study scores and ATARs, but a scored VCE is not the only pathway to success,” he said.“Education is not one size fits all. It makes sense that there are alternatives and maybe parents and carers are becoming more open to pathways which aren’t just a scored VCE.”
There are just three students at the school doing unscored VCE this year, half the number of the previous year. Australian Catholic University researcher Steven Lewis said that despite the many negative aspects of the pandemic, COVID encouraged a rethink of education and how schooling could serve students and society.
