Though the drop contributed to the theme of minimal rhythm for the Vikings offense, that play and Smith’s use in the passing game — he had five catches on eight targets for 36 yards and a touchdown — indicated that he could be used more as a pass catcher moving forward.
“When we have our offense in sync,” O’Connell said, “we’re going to be able to get some good matchups for Irv. If Justin is gonna dictate coverage, Irv is going to get some opportunities. And I’m excited about seeing him make some of those plays. Irv is going to have a heck of a year for us.”Ed Donatell, the Vikings’ first-year defensive coordinator, had experience coaching against Hurts and the Eagles.
A few of the lowlights: Hurts went 8-of-11 on passes farther than 10 yards, per Next Gen Stats, for 173 yards and a touchdown; overall, the Eagles ran for 163 yards on 34 carries; and four Eagles wide receivers (Goedert, Brown,
