Victor Willis, the original member of The Village People who wrote the lyrics for their hit song 'YMCA', denies that the track is a gay anthem. He insists the lyrics, often interpreted as referencing gay encounters, were actually inspired by 1970s Black slang for male camaraderie. Willis's stance comes after former US President Donald Trump used 'YMCA' as his campaign tune, further fueling the debate.
The Village People burst onto the disco scene in New York back in 1977, sporting a distinctive look that played on gay stereotypes and delivering a string of hits like Macho Man, In the Navy, and Go West with lyrics reportedly touching on the gay lifestyle. But, Victor Willis , an original member who penned the lyrics for their global chart-topper YMCA , insists the track is not a gay anthem .
The famous line "You can hang out with all the boys" was originally taken by many as a nod to gay encounters in the charity's gym and pool facilities. But according to Willis, this interpretation is off the mark - he says the phrase was just "1970s Black slang for Black guys hanging out together for sports, gambling or whatever. There's nothing gay about that," reports the Mirror US.
