If you’re concerned about which car brands are doing their best to get to absolutely zero carbon, Polestar is pretty much at the top of the tree: it’s the only car brand to say that net-zero is not good enough and is currently trying to build a car, called Project 0, that has zero carbon emissions associated with it and its entire supply chain.
So we found a Polestar 2, which is a sort of hatchback-y saloon , possibly the greenest of green cars, at Cork Airport, and jumped on board . The sun was bouncing off the empty roads, the wind blowing off the sea, as we drove silently away from Cork, on a loop up into the green, green hills of Tipperary. We stopped to picnic at the viewpoint of The Vee, a jack-knifed section of road with lay-bys and benches for tourists and exhausted cyclists. The air here is thick with the scent of a million purple rhododendrons which sprout and wave amid the chalky rocks and heather.
Our loop took us through beautiful Lismore, County Waterford, where the road bends over an ancient narrow bridge and past, the Irish seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. A stunning 12th-century castle with the oldest continuously cultivated garden in Ireland, Lismore has hosted Fred Astaire, Lucian Freud and John F Kennedy, and these days it can be hired in its entirety. Stuffy it is not, with elegant, contemporary interior design and a warm Irish welcome.
