Two days after the referendum was voted down by the Australian public, the fallout from the majority No vote continues.Thank you for joining us for our live coverage of the Voice to Parliament referendum fallout.A reminder there is support available for Indigenous Australians struggling with the issues that have been discussed today and throughout the campaign.
"And the leader of the opposition said during this process in September, 'we went to the last election and a number of elections before that with that as our policy, and that will be our policy going into the next, and again'.Paul FletcherMr Albanese responded by again bringing up Mr Dutton's comments on constitutional recognition of First Nations people.
"After a process in 2017, First Nations people through the Uluru Statement from the Heart, those eloquent 440 words, issued an invitation to Australians to walk with them on the form of recognition they sought. That was recognition through a Voice. There were then processes established, including under the former government, The Calma Langton Report and other processes, the joint committee chaired by Patrick Dodson and Julian Leeser, to progress this issue.
"We will address them with hope in our heart and with faith in each other and with kindness towards one another. Walking together in a spirit of unity and healing. "And I certainly accept responsibility for the decisions that I have taken. This was a constitutional change asked for, requested, and invitation from Indigenous Australians. I accepted that invitation and I followed through on the commitments that I made. Australians did not accept the constitutional change that was proposed. But no-one is arguing for the status quo. No-one can say that just keep on doing the same thing is good enough for Australia.
"And that is what the leader of the opposition sought to do, to wreck and to ruin, not to build and to inspire."said she was "very proud" of the way the debate was run in her electorate, blaming misinformation for the result. She said it was important these "challenging" conversations were had in a way that did not damage vulnerable children. Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said numbers from remote polling stations in the Northern Territory showed residents "want to be heard"."The bush vote, we do need to take note of that.Ms Fyles said her government would look at its current processes to help close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. In Victoria, like much of Australia, there was a clear divide between how people voted on the Voice, depending on where they lived in the state.
"Look, all of our policy, obviously as I said on Saturday night, is going to be reviewed in the process that Kerrynne and Jacinta will lead now," he said. "I will use this — and I hope that everyone else out there will use this — as motivation to do right by those people, and make outcomes better for Aboriginal people in the future," he said.David Speers
