Chris Lewis suffered spinal injuries during the fall and has now died in hospital
A volunteer who suffered serious injuries during the rescue of campers breaking lockdown rules has died in hospital.
Chris Lewis was one of several Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team volunteers called out in 2021 to search for two campers from Leicester and Liverpool who called for help when one starting to experience chest pains. The team had just reached their pair when Mr Lewis fell 500ft in 2021, severely damaging his spine.
The fall left him with multiple facial fractures and needing a wheelchair and round-the-clock care. The campers were each fined £200 for breaking the restrictions..Chris continued to support mountain rescue teams in the Lakes and, in March, received the Inspiring Eden Award for his bravery and service to the community.
"Chris was keen to continue putting as much back into this voluntary rescue service as he possibly could," he said. Mr Lewis was admitted to Furness General Hospital in Barrow on September 2 of this year with a chest infection and pneumonia and died two days later."He was very knowledgeable and was a great person to have around in the team," Mr Rippon added. "His expertise and companionship was brilliant for new team members."
