A historic landmark in London has been restored to its former glory after a devastating fire.
Walworth Town Hall , a beloved community landmark since its opening in 1894, suffered significant fire damage in 2013. This led to its inclusion on Historic England's ' Heritage at Risk' register and left it in a state of disrepair. However, a recent transformation by architects Feix & Merlin for developer General Projects has breathed new life into the Grade-II listed building. The extensive 50,000 sq ft project encompasses the former town hall, Newington Library, and Cuming Museum.
Each space has been redesigned for 21st-century use, blending period features with modern amenities. The building now accommodates approximately 550 workers, with tailor-made spaces for independent creative businesses. A community center, a new public café, and a restaurant in the central lobby ensure that Walworth Town Hall caters to everyone. Feix & Merlin, led by Julia Feix and Tarek Merlin, utilized modern techniques like cross-laminated timber (CLT) to replace fire-damaged sections. Some areas, like the former council chamber, were completely reconstructed due to irreversible damage

Town Hall Meeting Abandoned After 'Nazi' Insults and Physical AltercationA heated council meeting in Oldham was abandoned last night after 'Nazi' insults were hurled, party colleagues squared up to each other, and police were called. The explosive scenes erupted during a debate on the controversial Places for Everyone housing scheme, leading to abuse directed at councillors, members of the public, and the acting borough solicitor. An argument between Conservative leader Graham Sheldon and his deputy Lewis Quigg resulted in Quigg pushing Sheldon and declaring his resignation from the party. The meeting was adjourned, but resumed after a lengthy break. Despite requests for apologies, the meeting was again suspended when Quigg refused to apologize for his behavior. Council leader Arooj Shah condemned the actions of the disruptive members, stating that they were disrespectful to fellow councillors and the residents of Oldham.
