People born in these years are losing over £2,000 each from their bank accounts
People born between 1960 and 1969 have been flagged as at particular risk of fraud, with startling figures showing an average loss of over £2,000 each to scammers and alarmingly one in five victims are unable to reclaim their losses.
She also highlighted the profound impact that scams have beyond financial damage, stating: "Financial losses are common and are bad enough, but being scammed can also seriously affect people's quality of life and wellbeing. Many older people who are victimised experience a deep sense of shame, embarrassment, depression, social isolation and a decline in physical health, with some even losing their independence following a scam.
1. Read things very carefully Walsh offers sage advice for those who find themselves targeted by potential scammers, whether it be through digital messages or physical mail: "Always read something carefully. Who is it addressed to? It should be addressed to your name or email. Who is it coming from? If something seems suspicious, it probably is."
4. Don't always believe what you see Older individuals are more susceptible to online scams, especially when they spot a familiar official logo, according to Walsh. "When people hear these kinds of things on the phone, they hang up, but when they see them, they're much more likely to believe them." "I think the most important thing for older people, particularly online, is to be very, very wary about where they're clicking. So with any of these blue links within emails, text messages etc, that you click to go on to another platform, we say: stop, come out of where you are and go on to the official website and check from there."
