Both sparrows and robins stay in the UK over the winter, and both need a hand as the weather turns colder
As the UK continues to experience freezing conditions, people are being urged to lend a helping hand to common garden birds such as robins and sparrows. Despite the cold January weather, UK gardens remain a haven for various wildlife, including several bird species that choose to brave the winter months rather than migrate south.
Jackson further explained: "These pretty little birds are hugely territorial. In order to survive they need to protect and retain their patch, especially if there's a garden rich in bird food or a friendly human providing some sustenance." The experts attribute the decline, particularly in England, to less availability of food, climate change and pollution, the loss of nesting sites and even the introduction of unleaded petrol which they say 'produces toxic compounds such as methyl nitrate'. Gardeners are being encouraged to assist these classic British birds by feeding them during the colder, harsher winter months.
