UK households feeding pigeons in their garden have been issued a warning
UK households who enjoy feeding birds in their gardens have been cautioned by wildlife specialists. Experts are advising against the use of bird feeders as they tend to draw pigeons that swiftly consume the available food, leaving none for smaller birds.
Richard Green, a renowned wildlife expert from Kennedy Wild Bird Food and Pet Supplies, has suggested that residents should introduce seed trays to bird feeders, which helps reduce seed spillage on the ground that attracts pigeons. He also recommends encasing bird feeders with cages, enabling small birds access to the seeds while preventing larger birds like pigeons from feeding.
Mr Green elaborates on the rationale behind these measures: "Fallen seed is a major attraction for pigeons and other pests, such as rats. Adding seed catchers beneath feeders helps stop seeds from reaching the ground. It's also important to regularly clean up any remaining food to keep your garden tidy and free from unwanted visitors."
"Pigeons are not as agile as smaller birds, so creating feeding spaces with uneven or narrow perches can make a big difference in keeping them at bay."
