Warwick Davis pays tribute to Peter Mayhew: ‘I was enthralled, Chewbacca was Peter’
Warwick and Peter first appeared on screen together in 1983’s Return Of The Jedi; Peter starred as Chewbacca, Han Solo’s friend while Warwick played Ewok, Wicket W. Warrick.
‘But I soon learned to realise Chewbacca was Peter, he had a big heart and lovely humour and he bought that through the costume. Testament to him as well, it’s hard to convey emotion when you don’t have your facial features to work with.‘I had the pleasure over the years to interview him, and he will be sadly missed.’Peter, who stood at an impressive 7ft1in, passed away on the evening of 30 April at his Texas home, his family confirmed in a statement on Thursday night.
An official announcement about Mayhew’s death said: ‘The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away.American actress Carrie Fisher as she sits on the lap of British actor Peter Mayhew Peter gave life to the character back in 1977, when he appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope.
