A tragic plane crash involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a US military Black Hawk helicopter has occurred near Washington National Airport. The incident has resulted in significant casualties, with multiple bodies recovered from the Potomac River. Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized the incident, calling it 'preventable' and questioning the actions of both the helicopter and the control tower.
A passenger jet carrying at least 64 people collided with a US military Black Hawk helicopter before crashing into the Potomac River at 8:47 pm local time. The American Airlines flight was approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it was struck by the Sikorsky H-60 helicopter. Emergency response units are conducting search and rescue operations in the Potomac River near the airport.
Inflatable rescue boats were launched into the river from a point along the George Washington Parkway. Former President Donald Trump took to social media platform Truth Social to express his opinion on the incident, stating that the crash was 'preventable.' He questioned why the helicopter, traveling 'straight at the airplane for an extended period of time,' didn't alter its course. He also criticized the control tower for asking the helicopter if they saw the plane instead of directing them. This incident comes a week after President Trump fired all members of a key aviation security panel established after the Lockerbie plane bombing in 1988. This committee, which was responsible for examining safety issues at airlines and airports, no longer has any members. Stephanie Bernstein, whose husband was killed in the Lockerbie plane bombing and served on the aviation committee, expressed concern at the time of the firings, stating that she was no longer sure if the new administration would prioritize aviation security. As of now, at least 19 bodies have been recovered from the freezing water where the passenger jet and helicopter plunged into. CBS News reported that the plane broke into multiple pieces, now sitting in 5-8 feet of water. Families anxiously await news at the airport, with hope of finding survivors slowly fading
